A Tissue Connection
In 2024, I received a tissue transplant as part of a surgery I underwent. It was an experience that moved me deeply.
My recent health journey has been a powerful reminder of the impermanence of our bodies. We're merely tenants, not owners, briefly inhabiting them during our human experience. Since my surgery, this truth has taken on new significance. My body is no longer solely mine; it's now a shared space, with my donor and l inextricably united as roommates in this temporary residence.
As I recovered, I began working on "A Tissue Connection", a visual exploration of my post-surgery emotions and profound gratitude to my donor. Through symbolic imagery, the series explores themes of identity and self-reflection, femininity, loss and new beginnings, guardian angels and spiritual interconnectedness, and tissue as the flesh and fabric of life.
The collection includes several intimate portraits of myself alongside projected images of my grandmother, to whom I bear an uncanny resemblance. I never met her as she died of breast cancer when she was my age, but I have always felt her presence with me and all the more so recently.
